Symposium day – 3 September 2007

The Symposium Day on Monday has two symposia, both of them organised in collaboration with the Industrial Pharmacy Section.

In many countries there is a debate on how pharmaceuticals influence the environment when

turned into waste. What happens to non-used medicine and what happens to the residues that leaves our bodies with urine etc.? The Monday morning symposium deals with this problem.

The Monday afternoon symposium focuses on how we as pharmacists can contribute to guaranteeing the best therapeutic outcome of a pharmaceutical product. A long row of professionals are involved in this process – from the drug development over production and quality control and via the distribution channel and the community pharmacy to the user of the drug. The ultimate goal is safe and correct use of pharmaceuticals for the sake of patient safety and obtaining the best therapeutic outcome.

Forum for policy makers – 4 September 2007

Community pharmacists are at present facing a number of challenges and opportunities. No matter where in the world community pharmacists are practicing, issues such as pharmacist prescribing, deregulation of the pharmacy sector, leadership and succession, and the role of the pharmacist are on the table. It is crucial to have an open debate within the profession, encompassing practicing pharmacists as well as the future professionals.

Pharmacy students (IPSF) and Young Pharmacists Group (YPG) have joined forces with the Community Pharmacy Section and created this half-day of “Blue skye” discussions. Six hot topics have been chosen, and key people have been identified to come and give their –sometimes – provocative views on the topics and the future. The audience is invited to response.

Customer relationships – 4 September 2007

At the FIP Congress in Salvador Bahia, Brazil last year, Lars-Åke Söderlund, Sweden gave us an overview of customer relationships, why relationships are becoming more important even for pharmacies, how to deliver a unique customer experience, and insight into how to provide remarkable experiences for customers and staff alike linked to the customers expecations of pharmacy's service, and how pharmacies should act in the future in order to stay competitive.

Söderlund’s presentation appealed so much to the audience that the Section has decided to explore this interesting area more in depth and have invited Söderlund to organise a one day seminar on the topic.

Practitioners’ day

The Community Pharmacy Section has in recent years received an increasing number of abstracts. Most of them have been accepted for presentation as posters but due to time constraints only a limited number have been chosen for short oral presentation.

We have done something about that: we have allocated a full day for short oral presentations and even made it possible to have two sessions running in parallel. This means that we have space for more presentations and that there will be more time for discussions and experience exchange. The Section has chosen four topics and each topic will have a half-day programme.

The topics are:

·
Innovative ways of collaboration between community pharmacists and GPs
·
        Experiences with patient profiles
·
        Counterfeit medicines
·
The role of the pharmacist in public health

Abstracts on topics related to these themes will have our particular interest for short oral communications, but abstracts on any theme related to community pharmacy practice are welcomed.

Abstracts for posters are not restricted to these topics but should of course be of relevance for community pharmacy practice.

Don’t forget that all posters participate in the competition for the poster prize.

Continuing Education Programme – 6 September 2007

From Research to Daily Practice – Implementing “Family Pharmacy” – an Innovative Strategy and Business Model.

Research demonstrates its added value in bringing scientific evidence, applicable workflow methods and quality management standards into practice – easy to know, but so difficult to do. This is why, in Beijing, this one-day Continuing Education Programme will focus mainly on the implementation of innovative research projects into the daily practice of community pharmacies.

By providing concrete information, management and education resources, this Continuing Education Programme will give participants an opportunity to discuss and work with a number of practice models in the context of their own experience, culture and national environment.

Separate registration is required.

The use of informatics to improve medication safety – 6 September

The Pharmacy Information Section has invited our Section to co-organise a symposium on how to improve patient safety. The safe use of medicines depends on many factors, such as safe storage, safe prescribing, safe dispensing and counselling. Various techniques have been developed to improve and support these practices. The use of informatics has been identified as a crucial component of improving medication safety.
